Embedded in this Maker Faire concept is the fact that our students will read, write, research, and analyze the impact of their project asking, “Why is this important?”   “How do you know?”

Along the way our students will dream, imagine, explore and discover all the things that they can do!

It builds confidence in students as they revisit, revise and refine their thinking and work.  THINKING IS MESSY and you will observe that students will collaborate and share their ideas with each other they will reflect and self-assess their own work.  Below you will find lots of links that our children can do independently

Please take a two minute video clip of your child’s project and send it to me eculkin@schools.nyc.gov or ABrown 83@schools.nyc.gov  or through dojo to your child’s classroom teacher so we can post our students Maker Faire projects on our school website, www.PS176.org

KINDERGARTEN/GRADE 1 -BUSY BUILDERS LET’S GO!

Calling all BUSY BUILDER engineers!!!  Let’s build a city! What are some of the structures we find in our community? There are buildings, houses, bridges, railroads…maybe even castles? Can you build one?

The materials are right in your home! We can use toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, wrapping paper rolls, popsicle sticks, index cards, water bottles, straws, toothpicks, and so much more! Just use your imagination! We cannot wait to see what you come up with! You can use tape, string, glue, markers, paint, or whatever other material you need to build. Make sure to take a picture and send it to Mrs. Rodriguez on her hydroponics google classroom page or on your class dojo. We will all share our amazing structures the week of 4/20!  Go have some fun!

Be sure to keep your structures in a safe place. When we get back to school we can put all of our structures together and build one big city community! Below are some photos and websites to help you get off to a good start!

Creature Creators GRADE 2 and 3

Calling all creators! Ever wonder what an animal with a lion body, a pigeon beak, a dolphin tail, and owl eyes would look like? Well now is the time to find out!

Get ready to discover a new species…one that YOU create! While you can’t travel to faraway lands in the hopes of finding a new species right now, you can use what you know about plant and animal adaptation to create a new species of your own!

Your task is to design and create a new species using different animal and plant adaptations (can be either physical (body parts) or behavioral (what they do).

  1. Use the planning worksheet attached to help you brainstorm your new species! Answer the following questions:
  • What is the name of the animal?
  • Where will the animal live?
  • What are the physical features of this creature?(Think! Why are these features needed in this habitat? Example: If it lives in the ocean, what would it need on its body?)
  • What will it eat?
  • How will it breathe (lungs, gills, etc.)?
  • How does it move (legs, fins, flippers, wings, etc.)?
  • What type of body covering will it have (scales, fur, feathers, skin)?
  • What cool things does it do?
  • What does this creature do during the day? Or is it nocturnal?
  • Does this creature have any natural predators?

2. Build your new species! You can use cardboard, paper, art supplies….anything around the house!

You will be asked to take a photo or video of the final project. Information of where to send in the documents will follow. Submissions are due by April 20th.

GRADE 4/GRADE 5: The Gamers

Calling all GAMERS. . .

Get ready to host a family game night. The best part is, it’s a game that was created by you!

Your task is to design and build a game that you can play with your family

-Think of the design for the game.

  – Will it be a card game, board game, . . .?

– Will it model an existing game? (Monopoly, Battleship, etc)

– How many people will be able to play?

– What age group is best for this game?

– Think of a theme for the game.

                  – Will I choose a topic I’m interested in learning about?

                  – Will I choose a topic of something I’ve been learning about in school?

                  – Will my topic be something that expresses my talents?

   – Create your game.

– What materials do I have at home that I can use?

– Should I draw or print my cards/ instructions?

– How can I make sure my game is created neatly?

– What are the rules of the game? Create a rules sheet.
